This book tells a rare but real story about two young boys who received their high school diploma in Szeged - Hungary after the 1943 - 44 school year which was shortened because the Germans occupied the Country on March 19, 1944. They learned what the school curriculum required, mathematics, physics, chemistry, history, literature, Latin, German, but they did not learn anything about what most Hungarians did not know either, what was happening in the real World. Hungary until the German occupation was sort of an Island in a horribly devastated world, Europe, Russia and the Far East. What these two "kids" and most of the Hungarian population did not know, and was totally unprepared for, was that the year after their graduation from high school would become the most horrible year of the twentieth century. At age eighteen they were drafted into a Labor Brigade and were exposed to horrors, forced labor, forced marches, prisons, military, tribunals, concentration camps, discrimination... But this book is not only the narration of how these two boys, one of them the writer survived what one could call the "adventures" of the "Leap Year". It is a true chronicle of the end of World War II, of the Hungarian holocaust of good, bad and indifferent people and about the cheerful vitality which helped to survive.

"Congratulations! The book was an enjoyable read. It is a strangewording to use about a novel which takes place in the Holocaust. Because it tells the story of the adventurous escape of two young boy's and their stories, the reader sometimes can even laugh. It is also of great value to me that you show how diverse Hungary was from the Nazi nsters to the military officers helping the boys even by writing them travel documents. Istvan Szabo, Movie Director, (Sunshine 1999) Received the OscaIr award for his 1981 movie Mephisto.

An incredible story of two boys who managed by wit, luck and bumbling to make their way through the final chaotic year of World War II. They were able to persevere in spite of, or perhaps, because of their complete lack of comprehension of how unlikely they were to survive. This is a remarkable memoir of a year in the author's life, told with suspense and humor.

Dr. Varadi was able to capture perfectly the terrors and wonders of his youth during a shameful time in world history. It was amazing to me that even at a time of abuse that he still maintained a joy of life. He recalls the events with clarity. I had difficulty putting down the book until I had finished it.
I recently read this very special, indeed stunning, book. I had worked professionally with the author and knew that his non-fiction book had been published in Hungary [2008]. It was well received there. Even the famous Hungarian movie director, Istvan Szabo, acclaimed it highly [Sunshine 1999, Oscar Award for Mephisto-1981,...etc.].Now it is available in English. The book by Dr. Ferenc Z. Varadi covers his dramatic escapes at age 18 from the harrowing life surrounding him. It also relates the trauma of associated intimate friends and close family members. In addition, the quite original, Hungarian like, writing style is virtually a verbalized rendition, particularly when it pertains to his pragmatism and survival logic. Its dry humor, in the face of unexpected devastating adversity, is remarkable.
I just read a most amazing and interesting book - in fact I could hardly put it down. It takes us back to
the war years and shows us how even in most difficult times and dramatic moments, one could cry and laugh
at the same time and with hope and luck , the author managed to survive impossible situationhs... I recommend
this book to anyone who has not experienced the trauma of those war years.

This is an extraordinary book. The author must be well into his eighties yet he is able to describe the madness of the 1944 WWII debacle in Hungary just as he lived it at 18 years of age. The youthful narrator is naive, optimistic, ready to rough it, quick to note and remember when and what food he is eating, pretty women he encounters, a new kind of plane or machine gun ---- all this as he and his Jewish friend wander Hungary for nearly a year, first as forced laborers and then on the run, doing their best to outwit Hungarian fascist guards, Hitler Youth, Russian soldiers and unexpected bureaucratic reversals.
The chaos of the times, the general lack of knowledge of what was happening in the War, the human capacity to hope (When will the people who were deported in those sealed cars return home?) all this is portrayed in an easy to read flowing Hungarian-English that sets the reader squarely in the time and place.
An excellent book for students and adults alike. Highly recommended.
Numerous true stories were published yet it is rare to come across a book about the most terrifying times and read the life of a survivor of the Nazi regime with one eye crying and the other smiling. Well, the youngster whose story is revealed with precize details has survived not only because he was brave, smart, lucky, or creative, but because he had the natural instinct of thinking ahead, and keeping his mind clear. He also had a "funny bone" that inspired not only himself but the people around him. It is a delightful read about the morbid times when a country's highest priority was still implementing the "final solution" at the end of the war while other nations collaborated to end Hitler's regime. The book is an unexpected gift for all of us from an excellent scientist, who thankfully was able to contribute a lot in his field of expertise in his active years, and now in his "retirement" he transformed himself to a pretty good writer.
