Peo Haskell went to the moon intending to be the first woman to walk on the surface. But she came home without landing. The world never knew why. In this 3,500-word companion story to the novel Girl on the Moon, we find out the truth about what went wrong with Peo's mission. Not since Apollo 13 had a mission to the moon aborted without landing. Did Peo "have a problem?" Or was something else going on?

This is a standalone story that can be read before or after (or during!) Girl on the Moon. The novel is available in the and in paperback!

NOTE this is a short short story, about 3,500 words, equivalent to about a dozen paperback pages.

QUICKTAKE:

12-page short story that introduces the character and her mission that is detailed in the companion book The Girl on the Moon. Although the writing, what little there is, is good, and although there is an intriguing dialogue that begs for more, this story is not recommended for purchase. As a freebie teaser to the main story, though, it would be fine. Beware the adult language, including the f-bomb.

Of course, had I been my usual skeptical self, I'd have borrowed this through my Kindle Unlimited account. Alas, though, I already had 10 titles in my library, so I took a chance with this based on the reviews that were already posted.

Length: Print, 12 pages.

Target Audience/Genre: This is a Science Fiction short story, companion to The Girl on the Moon.

Q - What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published?
A – 56,067.

Q - How was this book obtained?
A – Purchased through Amazon.

Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?
A – Yes, this is a stand alone story.

Q - Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?
A – No.

Q - Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?
A – Fast. Too fast for the price.

Q - What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made?
A – Adult English, including an f-bomb.

Q - My biggest pleasure or disappointment?
A – While it did get me curious about the larger story in The Girl on the Moon, I must admit to disappointment that this actually cost me a dollar. There just isn’t enough to satisfy any desire in reading a story. Despite that, what little story is written is written well. It does entice me to launch into the novel.

Lost Moon also ends on a cliffhanger but, since the book is already written, I’m not especially bothered about the cliffhanger.

To give a feel for the editing, and the style and flow of this work, I am posting a brief excerpt below.

Due to the length of the story, I am including no excerpts.

Bottom Line:

Honestly, I cannot recommend this short story. If, when I read the Girl on the Moon, my opinion changes, I will update this review. Otherwise, I think there is no justification for spending 99 cents for this in its current iteration. On the other hand, it is okay for Kindle Unlimited.

As a Kindle Unlimited read, though, it is fine.

Three stars out of five, because it does intrigue and beg the reader to jump into the full length novel.

Comments regarding your opinion of this book or of my review, whether favorable or unfavorable, are always welcome. If you buy the book based on my review and become disappointed, especially, I do want to know that and I want to understand how I can improve as a book reviewer. Just please be polite.

Thank you.

Lost Moon A Girl on the Moon Story edition by Jack McDonald Burnett Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I was honestly disappointed with the book. It may have been better to call it a short story or possibly a tiny novella. I was actually a bit miffed that I paid 99 cents for it.
Jack McDonald Burnett story is a great prequel to the series. I'm half way through A Girl on the moon. Fantastic adventure taking my time to finish it.
Too short , leaves too many questions unanswered. Would not recommend. Buy Girl on the Moon, it's a good book and provides most of the answers. It also adds a few new twists.
Fun book to read
A quick fun read. If you want something to breeze through to get a feel for an author's style this is a great idea. A nice bit of a story that you can read without needing to read the Girl on the Moon novel.
This story did not end how I thought it would. And given how it did end, I'm surprised it went that way.
Don't get me wrong, it was well written and I enjoyed this short story, but I was left wondering why the protagonist chose the path she did. Maybe that's the point, to get you interested in the following novel.
...It beckoned her. It had all her life." Short sci-fi tale with realistic dialogue, engaging plot, and a well-developed character that I could emphasize with. Fine follow-up to the tale "The Lady Astronaut of Mars" by Mary Robinette Kowal that I enjoyed over a year ago and am hoping to find even more books of this ilk. I consider "Lost Moon" as only the prequel to an even better more complex novel by the same author, and look forward to reading more of the adventures of Peo Haskell in her role as "A Girl on the Moon" in what I hope is the very near future. Well done!
A wonderful short story. I held my breath during some of the decisions characters were making. I really enjoyed the descriptions of existing in space as well - very clear, in such a way that you could picture the beauty and bleakness.

I give this story major props for fleshing out an older woman character without falling into the pitfalls that many writers trip into with such a character. Peo is intelligent and strong, and her motivations are interesting. You can see why she becomes a hero to the main character of the associated novel. The story never loses its sci-fi bearings, nevertheless, I was a bit choked up at the end.
